In spite of losing three of the first four games, the varsity displayed a good attitude and always worked hard for improvement and teamwork. Their reward came when they upset McQuaid, the team which had outclassed them in the season’s opener. Other highlights were the double victories over Irondequoit, Webster, Penfield, and Brighton.
Featuring the team’s play was the record of Bob Meyers. Bob culminated four years of basketball development with an average of over 20 points per game. His performance marks him as one of the best players in Coach Paddock’s experience at Fairport. Boyd Hannan showed marked improvement and maintained an average of more than 17 points per game. Matt DiRisio, Mel LaRosa, and Ed Carney also turned in good performances. The playing of the Juniors on the squad, combined with that of the Jay-Vees, offered the possibilities of a strong team for 1958-1959. In final league standings Fairport trailed behind strong Brockport and East Rochester teams.
